DEI Statement

Members of the Flagel Lab are committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive environment. We value the collaborative and respectful environment that characterizes our lab and work together to maintain it. We learn from each other how best to support individuals from populations historically underrepresented in our field and how to engage in anti-racism practices. We try to normalize and embrace the uncomfortable conversations that are necessary in order to make progress. We recognize that diversity is essential to scientific progress and that inclusion is critical, and we embrace the different backgrounds and cultures represented in our laboratory.

The Flagel Lab promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion
in the following ways

  • Community outreach events, often focused on youth who would not otherwise be exposed to science or scientific careers at such a young age
  • Participation in summer mentorship programs aimed at enhancing diverse representation in neuroscience
  • Attendance at institutional workshops to further our education surrounding topics of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Bi-monthly lab meetings centered around topics of diversity, equity and inclusion
